Different societies in the world see men and women in marriages has having unique qualities and distinct roles. While a woman on the one hand desires to be special and enjoyed in her relationship with her man.
The man on the other hand, longs to experience confidence in approaching a woman and knowing that he alone can touch her deeply like no one else.
Understanding the distinction between men and women in life and in marriage is important for there to be peaceful co-existence between the sexes.
However, just understanding these distinctions is not enough for a couple to live as one as proclaimed in the Holy Scriptures when it says: “Haven’t you read the Scriptures? Jesus replied. They record that from the beginning God made them male and female. And, he said, This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one".(Matthew 19:4-6).
Many marriages today suffer because the husband is saying to himself, "I don't know why she just does not understand me," while his wife in the same vein complains about her husband's lack of understanding her feelings to her friends.
Just like in the example given above; men and women may be right in their assessment of their partner's shortcoming(s). However, where both parties are wrong is in their self-centeredness which does not make either to see the need to be other concerned as advised in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 12: 25 which says that the members should have the same care one for another; a similar appeal is also given in Ephesians 5:21: "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God."
How then can this concern for the other person in a marriage relationship be encouraged, First it is important to note that this requirement is not just in male female relationships or marriages alone. But portrays how God wants every Christian to live in his relationships with the rest of humanity.
To give the answer to this question one must always remember that the tendency to consider self before another is in us as human beings although the ability of God to live above this tendency is also present because we have the Spirit of God in us (Romans 7:23; 1 Corinthians 6:19).
This is why we must never find ability in ourselves to live in this spiritual way, but forever entrust ourselves to God in prayer by accepting and confessing our shortcomings (not justified shortcomings). This way we are sure God listens to us and we get the required response.
In conclusion, believers; men and women as husbands or wives and members of the society should seek to meet the needs of the other person as God expects. Husbands should love their wives and wives should be submissive to their husbands. For more on this please read the whole of Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3.
